Varanasi — Kashi, Banaras — is among the oldest continuously lived-in cities on earth, and for Hindus the holiest. The Ganga curves past a long crescent of stone ghats where people bathe, pray, wash, and are cremated. To die here, it is believed, is to be released from the cycle of rebirth.
A visit settles into a rhythm of river and lane. Most begin before dawn with a boat from Assi or Dashashwamedh ghat, drifting north as the sun rises. Days go to Kashi Vishwanath, the Vishwanath Dham corridor, the tangled old town, and a trip out to Sarnath. Evening returns to Dashashwamedh for the aarti.
The city is intense in every sense. Bells and conches, marigold and woodsmoke, cows in the lanes, ash on the steps. The Vishwanath temple has been destroyed and rebuilt across centuries; the corridor opened in 2021 cleared a path from shrine to river. Nothing here is arranged for comfort. It simply continues, as it has.
Some moments are built for lingering: the first light on the water from a slow boat, oars dipping; the roll of the Dashashwamedh aarti, lamps rising in the priests’ hands; the hush of Sarnath’s deer park after the river’s noise; and the long look across to Manikarnika, its fires steady, kept from a respectful distance.
For travellers drawn to faith at its most unfiltered, who want the Ganga, the aarti and the old city whole. It is not for anyone needing quiet, order or distance from death — the cremation ghats are visible, constant, and emotionally heavy, and the crowds can overwhelm.
