WHERE EUROPE MEETS ASIA

  • A short hop from Indian metros, often under four hours, Baku sits where the Caspian laps a city that spent its oil money on glass towers and kept its walled medieval core intact. Five nights is right: three for the capital and its edges, two for the mountains north, without a single wasted repositioning day.
  • Days pair the old and the strange. One walks Icherisheher’s lanes, the Maiden Tower and the carpet museum. One runs south to Gobustan’s petroglyphs and the mud volcanoes that spit cold grey clay. One climbs north to Gabala’s cable cars and pine air. Evenings belong to the seafront boulevard and the Flame Towers.
  • The land shifts fast. Around Gobustan it is scrubbed semi-desert, lunar and khaki, the Caspian flat beyond. Two hours north the Greater Caucasus rise green and forested, cooler by ten degrees, more Kashmir than desert. Baku itself summers hot near 35, so the mountains are less a detour than relief.
  • Some moments are built for lingering: the Flame Towers switching from blue to fire at 9 pm, watched from Highland Park with the bay dark below; cold mud closing over your fingers at a volcano no taller than a man; the Old City’s call to prayer bouncing off stone walls at dawn.
  • Built for curious couples, culture-first travellers and families who like a city with room to move. Not for beach-seekers — the Caspian is for looking, not swimming — nor for anyone wanting nightlife on a European scale or a long single-base stay without a couple of full driving days.

FAQ

know

Do Indian passport holders need a visa for Azerbaijan?

Arrow

Yes, but it is straightforward — Indians apply online for an ASAN e-visa, usually issued within about three working days for a 30-day single entry. No embassy visit, no interview. Apply only through the official portal, or let your curator file it. Confirm current processing times before booking, as they occasionally lengthen in peak months.

How is Azerbaijan for vegetarian travellers?
