THE GREAT MIGRATION
Kenya sits one flight and a change from India, then a short hop to a dirt airstrip on the Mara plains. Six nights is the honest number for a real safari: enough drives to build luck, a balloon dawn, and time in the Mara rather than a rushed two-night dash that leaves the best sightings to chance.
Days run on the animals’ clock. Game drives leave camp by 6.30 am and again at 4 pm, when the cats hunt and the light is gold. A balloon dawn with bush breakfast is the standout add-on. Between July and October, drives point towards the Mara River, where the migration herds gather to cross.
The Mara is open savannah — waist-high grass, flat-topped acacias, big skies and sudden riverine forest along the water. Days are mild and bright, nights cool enough for a fleece; this is highland Africa, not steaming coast. The migration timing shifts each year with the rains, so no crossing is ever guaranteed to a date.
Some moments are built for lingering: the balloon lifting silently at 6 am as the plains turn from grey to gold beneath; a lioness leading cubs across the track close enough to hear them; the tension at a river crossing when a thousand wildebeest hesitate on the bank, then pour into the water at once.

Do Indian passport holders need a visa for Kenya?
Kenya has moved to an electronic travel authorisation (eTA) that Indians apply for online before travel, replacing the older visa on arrival. Apply a couple of weeks ahead through the official portal, or let your curator file it. Requirements and processing times for the eTA have changed recently, so confirm the current rules before booking flights.
