Journey Highlights

  • Watch Mysuru Palace switch on — nearly a lakh of bulbs at 7 pm on illumination evenings.
  • Smell your way through Devaraja Market at 8 am: jasmine by the kilo, banana varieties you can’t name.
  • Ride the Nilgiri Mountain Railway from Mettupalayam, steam and rack-and-pinion hauling you up to Coonoor.
  • Hang out of the carriage window through 16 tunnels as plains heat turns to eucalyptus chill.
  • Stay among Coonoor’s tea estates and walk the pluckers’ rows before breakfast.
  • A tea-factory tasting where you finally learn what “orthodox” and “CTC” mean in the cup.
  • Ooty done selectively — the Botanical Gardens and a lake row, skipping what the coaches queue for.

Experience Overview

Five nights that climb from a maharaja’s city to the Nilgiris’ tea line, with the ascent itself as the set piece — the UNESCO-listed Nilgiri Mountain Railway, 46 kilometres of steam, rack and viaducts from Mettupalayam. Two nights in Mysuru, then three in the hills, weighted towards Coonoor’s quieter estates over Ooty’s bazaar bustle.

Mysuru gives you the palace by day and lit by night, Devaraja Market early, Chamundi Hill, and silk and sandalwood bought where they’re actually made. Then the morning toy train from Mettupalayam — roughly five hours of climbing. Hill days mix estate walks, a working tea-factory tasting, Sim’s Park, and drives to viewpoints above the clouds.

The transition is the pleasure: banana and paddy at the bottom, then coffee, then eucalyptus, then tea clipped like green corduroy across every slope above Coonoor. Ooty sits at 2,240 metres, so evenings dip near single digits in winter — fireplaces are lit, and colonial-era hotels lean happily into the nostalgia.

Some moments are built for lingering: the whistle echoing off the gorge as the steam engine takes the rack section; the palace’s bulbs coming on at 7 pm sharp to a collective gasp; and bed tea on an estate veranda while mist erases and redraws the valley twice before breakfast.

Built for multi-generation families, rail romantics, and honeymooners who prefer cardigans to cocktails. Not for travellers who need efficiency — the toy train is slower than the road and that is the point — nor for peak-May visitors, when Ooty’s traffic can outdo Bengaluru’s.

FAQs

Everything you
need to know

Is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway worth the time, and can we get seats?

Arrow

Emphatically yes — it is the journey's centrepiece, not a gimmick. But demand outstrips the little train badly; first-class seats in season need booking as soon as reservations open. If tickets fail, we run the Mettupalayam–Coonoor section strategy or board at Coonoor, and the car carries your luggage up regardless.

What is the weather like — do we really need warm clothes?

Picture Mysuru Palace fully illuminated at night, thousands of bulbs tracing its domes; the blue-and-cream Nilgiri toy train curving over a stone viaduct with steam trailing; tea pluckers’ rows in Coonoor threaded by mist with a single red umbrella; jasmine garlands stacked in coils at Devaraja Market as a vendor’s hands mid-weave; and a colonial bungalow fireplace with a tea tray while rain streaks the window behind.
