INTO THE HIGHLANDS
Five nights that start on Edinburgh’s cobbles and end on Skye’s cliff edges. This route is designed to bolt onto a London trip — one UK visa, one flight up, a different country in everything but paperwork — though it stands perfectly well alone for travellers who want Britain’s wild half.
Edinburgh gets the first two nights: the castle at opening time, the Royal Mile, Arthur’s Seat for the energetic. Then the road north — Loch Lomond’s banks, Glencoe’s valley, a Loch Ness cruise from Fort Augustus — before two nights on Skye for the Storr, Kilt Rock and the Fairy Pools.
The Highlands do drama on a low budget of colour — green, grey, brown, then sudden gold when the sun breaks through. Roads narrow to single track on Skye, sheep hold right of way, and the weather delivers four seasons before lunch. That changeability is the point; postcard-blue Skye is the rare exception.
Some moments are built for lingering: Edinburgh Castle’s one o’clock gun making the whole esplanade jump; Glencoe at 5 pm when the tour coaches have gone and the valley goes silent; and the Old Man of Storr appearing out of cloud exactly as you decide the climb was a mistake.
Built for road-trip lovers, photographers, honeymooners who prefer moody to tropical, and UK repeaters ready to leave London behind. Not for travellers who need guaranteed sunshine, short drive days or big-city evenings — Highland dinners finish early and the nightlife is mostly weather.

Do we need a separate visa for Scotland?
No — Scotland is part of the UK, so the same Standard Visitor visa covers London and the Highlands on one trip. Apply online with a VFS biometric appointment; standard processing is quoted around three weeks but runs longer before summer, so we open files six to eight weeks ahead of travel.
