Five nights across two ridge towns that watch the same colossal mountain from different verandahs. Darjeeling brings the famous furniture — the toy train, the tea gardens, Tiger Hill. Kalimpong, an hour and a half away across the Teesta, brings what Darjeeling has lost: space, orchids and unhurried afternoons.
Darjeeling days start early — Tiger Hill at dawn, the Batasia Loop joyride, Happy Valley’s withering rooms — and settle into Mall wanders, momo stops and the mountaineering institute’s Everest relics. Kalimpong days are gentler: Durpin monastery, Deolo Hill at 1,704 metres, flower nurseries, and haat-day shopping if your dates land on one.
This is the Himalaya at its most domesticated and most theatrical at once. Tea bushes corduroy every slope, blue-and-cream trains squeeze past shopfronts close enough to touch, and then the clouds part and Kanchenjunga fills a third of the sky — absurdly big, and gone again twenty minutes later.
Some moments are built for lingering: the crowd’s collective gasp at Tiger Hill when the first summit catches light; steam and coal smoke drifting over Batasia’s flower beds; a tasting spoon of first flush going floral on your tongue; Kalimpong’s church bells mixing with monastery horns across the valley. Keep mornings free and unplanned.
Built for tea drinkers, railway romantics, families with grandparents, and anyone nostalgic for hill stations with bookshops. Not for view-guarantee travellers — Kanchenjunga hides behind cloud for days at a stretch, especially May to September — and not for those who resent steep lanes and early alarms.

October–November and late March–April give the most reliable clear mornings; December–February is cold but often crystalline. Monsoon months hide the range almost entirely. Views favour dawn — build in two Tiger Hill chances if the mountain matters to you.
