Everyone has been to Dubai; fewer people have actually seen it — the 4 pm light going gold on the dunes, the fountain crowds falling quiet mid-show. Five nights, sequenced properly, with desert safaris timed for good light and the Burj booked for sunset, so Dubai stops being a stopover.

Days open vertical — the Burj Khalifa at sunset, the Dubai Fountain below, and a Downtown circuit through the mall’s aquarium tunnel and the Dubai Frame. A desert afternoon brings dune bashing, sandboarding and a camel ride into a BBQ camp evening, before the Museum of the Future and a seasonal garden close the trip.

The city runs from glass towers to open dune country within an hour’s drive, the desert turning from rust-gold to violet as the Burj’s lights come on block by block. Some moments are built for lingering: dune grass throwing long shadows at 5.30 pm while your driver deflates tyres for the sand; sharks passing a metre above your head in the aquarium tunnel; and the exact moment the Burj’s lights come on below you as the desert sky turns violet.
