Experience Overview

At the bottom of South America, three granite towers rise straight off the Patagonian steppe, and the trails that circle them are among the finest walking on the planet. This is Torres del Paine — glaciers, guanacos, turquoise lakes and a wind with real force, walked over several days with a hot meal and bed each night.

You base in and around the park, walking the W over four to five days: the Grey Glacier arm, the French Valley in the middle, and the pre-dawn climb to the Torres base lookout. We add a crossing into Argentina for Perito Moreno glacier at El Calafate, and buffer time for the weather to misbehave.

The trails are well-marked but long, five to nine hours a day over rock, root and exposed ridge, with steep pushes to the lookouts. The catch is the weather: four seasons in an afternoon, and wind that can genuinely knock you sideways. November to March is the southern summer window, mildest but busiest, and never truly calm.

Some moments are built for lingering: the last dark climb to the Torres lookout, then the towers igniting orange as the sun clears the horizon; icebergs from Grey Glacier turning slowly on a grey lake; and standing at a railing on Perito Moreno as a tower of blue ice shears off and hits the water with a sharp crack.

For hardy walkers who want big, wild landscape and don’t mind rain, wind and long days for it. Not for those wanting warm, predictable weather, luxury at every step, or a short hop — this is a long-haul journey from India with real physical demands and mud.

FAQs

Everything you
need to know

How fit do I need to be for the W-trek?

Arrow

Fit enough to walk five to nine hours a day, several days running, over uneven ground with some steep climbs, carrying a daypack. Train with long hikes and hill repeats beforehand. It's non-technical and low-altitude, so the challenge is endurance and weather resilience rather than thin air. Good waterproofs and broken-in boots matter as much as fitness.

What's the catch with weather and getting there?

Torres del Paine

The three Torres granite towers glow red at sunrise above a milky glacial lake and boulders, while a hiker leans hard into fierce wind on an exposed ridge, lenga scrub flattened around them. The blue calving face of Grey Glacier scatters icebergs across a slate-grey lake below, as guanacos graze golden steppe with the Paine massif and dark cloud stacked behind them. Further on, the cracked blue wall of Perito Moreno glacier meets brown lake water, viewing walkways at its foot.
