The Ramayana never stayed in India. Carried by traders and priests over centuries, it took root across Southeast Asia and grew local — new names, new endings, Buddhist and Hindu alike. This trail follows Rama’s story where it lives abroad: Thailand’s Ramakien, Cambodia’s Reamker, Indonesia’s Prambanan and Bali, and the Lao Phra Lak Phra Lam.
A natural route runs Bangkok to Bali. Begin with the Ramakien murals at Wat Phra Kaew and the ruins of Ayutthaya, fly to Siem Reap for the Reamker galleries at Angkor Wat, then to Java for the Prambanan ballet under the temple towers, and end in Bali with the Kecak fire dance at Uluwatu.
Each country tells it differently. In Thailand, Rama becomes Phra Ram, a king; the tale is court art and mask-dance khon. At Angkor, Suryavarman’s carvers set the war in sandstone in the twelfth century. Java dances it as ballet; Bali chants it as Kecak, invented in the 1930s. Same bones, four very different bodies.
Some moments are built for lingering: the Reamker galleries at Angkor Wat in low morning light, panel after panel of Rama’s war; the Prambanan ballet with the lit temple towers behind the dancers; the Kecak circle at Uluwatu as the sun drops into the sea; the calm brick spires of Ayutthaya at the end of day.
For readers of the Ramayana, lovers of dance and temple art, and anyone curious how one story crossed borders. It is not a temple-worship pilgrimage — much of it is performance and archaeology — nor a single-visa quick trip, since it spans several countries and long flights.

Can we actually see the performances, or is it luck?
The Prambanan Ramayana ballet runs on a set schedule, more often in the dry season and around full moons at the open-air stage; the Uluwatu Kecak is nightly at sunset. Angkor and Ayutthaya are open daily. We book the ballet and dance seats in advance and time your nights so nothing is left to chance.

The Reamker relief at Angkor Wat unfolds as a long sandstone gallery of carved warriors and monkeys in Rama’s battle, while the Prambanan Ramayana ballet brings dancers in gold costume before the floodlit spires of the Hindu temple at night. At Uluwatu, the Kecak dance rings bare-chested chanting men around firelight as the sun sets over the sea, and in Bangkok the murals of the Ramakien line the cloister walls of Wat Phra Kaew in richly painted panels.
