From The Field

Our curators have stood in the Shibuya crush at the exact second the countdown hits zero, the whole crossing erupting on the same beat — and then, three mornings later, stood in a silent queue at Meiji Jingu’s gate at dawn, the loudest city in Japan gone completely quiet for one line of people making the same walk. Do the countdown once, properly, then let Hakone’s onsen fix whatever the countdown broke. That’s the whole trip.

FAQ

Questions, Answered
Answered

Is Shibuya's countdown crowded enough to be a problem?

Arrow

Yes, and that's rather the point — it's one of the most-attended countdowns anywhere, and a huge part of its character is being in that crowd. If it sounds like too much, we can route the midnight moment to a rooftop bar with a crossing view instead, same drama, considerably more room.

What is Hatsumode, and is it worth building a day around?

Why is there an onsen night in the middle of the trip?

Is Japan closed over New Year, or does everything stay open?
