Six million people visit Oktoberfest; most of them never get a seat. This journey is built around the one thing that matters on the Theresienwiese — a reserved table inside a tent, with a host who knows which one suits your group. The 191st Wiesn runs 19 September to 4 October 2026, a group of 8 to 16.

Here is what nobody tells you: the big tents hold thousands, entry is free, and that is exactly the problem. Walk in without a reservation on a Saturday and you’ll stand in a doorway watching other people’s fun. We work the opposite way — tables booked months ahead, a host handling ordering, pacing and etiquette, and Augustiner’s wooden barrels explained against Hofbräu’s tourist singing.

We go before noon on the first day, when the bands are warming up and a Mass arrives with a pretzel wider than your face. A second evening session in a smaller, local tent gives contrast, then the funfair. A Bavaria day out clears the head — Neuschwanstein or the Eagle’s Nest. Munich sits at 8–18°C; carry a jacket for the walk home.

Some moments are built for lingering: the band striking “Ein Prosit” for the first time as your table clinks litre glasses with strangers from four countries; a pretzel-and-Weisswurst breakfast at a market stall while commuters weave past in dirndls; the Ferris wheel at 10 pm, the tents glowing below like paper lanterns, the noise finally distant.

Friends’ groups and couples who want the festival with its chaos curated, not removed. Also for beer-curious travellers who drink slowly — the tents pour excellent alcohol-free Weissbier and half the fun is the singing. It is not for anyone seeking quiet romance, and children under teens will find the tents overwhelming.
