Two residential football camps, run as separate options rather than one trip. Ten days at Manchester United’s Soccer School, coached in the club’s own methodology on academy pitches. Or a fortnight in Barcelona at Complex Esportiu La Báscula, led by a former FC Barcelona youth player, with language classes threaded through the week. Both follow a fixed curriculum, and both end with something the player carries home.
• Ten residential days at Manchester United’s Soccer School, coached by UEFA and FA-qualified staff in the club’s methodology.
• Daily sessions on the club’s youth-academy pitches, the same ground United’s own young players train on each week.
• An Old Trafford stadium tour with the Museum and Megastore, then a weekend down to London and Wembley.
• A closing presentation ceremony on the Old Trafford pitch, name read out, with full Soccer School kit throughout.
• Fourteen residential days at Complex Esportiu La Báscula in Barcelona, led by former FC Barcelona youth player Raul Ayala Borel.
• Football threaded with English or Spanish language classes, the child choosing which language to build over the fortnight.
• Camp Nou and its museum, the Sagrada Família, Park Güell, a full day at Port Aventura, two training kits.

Why send your child
Ten days of foreign coaching does not turn a good schoolboy footballer into a professional. What it does is harder to sell and more useful. It resets what he thinks normal looks like, on the pitch and off it. Here is what parents tell us they notice in the weeks after he lands.
Technical honesty — a coach who does not know him names the same fault every session until it changes, which a familiar coach at home rarely manages.
Independence — a residential fortnight means his own kit, his own timetable and his own laundry, with no parent within four thousand miles.
Language and nerve — Barcelona’s daily English or Spanish classes put him in a room where he is the one struggling, and then improving.
Safety he never notices — police-verified Picknic chaperones at one per eight, on-site residential staff overnight, doctor-on-call at each base, evening WhatsApp updates home.
Perspective — standing in an empty Old Trafford, or on La Báscula’s pitches, rearranges a fourteen-year-old’s sense of how large the game actually is.
Who it’s for
Players who already turn out regularly for a school team, academy or serious club side, and who can hold their own in a session conducted in English or Spanish. Manchester’s Soccer School appears to set its age floor at ten; Barcelona takes players from eight. Both suit a child who is comfortable sleeping away from home for ten to fourteen nights.
It is not for a child hoping to be spotted. No scouts attend, nobody is assessed for signing, and a player who arrives believing he is at a trial will play badly for ten days and learn nothing. It is also wrong for a complete beginner, or for a child who has never been away overnight. The first homesick night is real, and a foreign residence is a hard place to meet it.
Tell us the age, the level they play at, and which summer weeks are actually free once school and exams are settled. We will say honestly whether Manchester or Barcelona suits them better, and where the camp would be wasted on them. Cost comes as a custom group quote we walk you through on the call, line by line.
How is my child supervised on a residential camp abroad?
Both camps are residential with on-site staff day and night. Picknic sends its own chaperones on top of that, one per eight players, always including a female chaperone. Our staff are police-verified and first-aid certified, a doctor-on-call is arranged at each base, and parents get a WhatsApp update every evening.
Is this a trial, or a route into the club?
No, and we would rather lose the booking than blur it. Both are development camps run to a set curriculum. Coaches are UEFA and FA-qualified in Manchester and Catalan Football Federation-certified in Barcelona, but no player is assessed for signing and no scouts attend. Stadium visits are the public tour and museum.
Can we do Manchester and Barcelona on the same trip?
In practice, no. The clubs fix their own dates independently, the residences are booked separately, and the age floors differ, with Manchester apparently starting at ten against Barcelona's eight. Treat them as two options and pick one. Some families return for the other camp a year later, which works well.
How far ahead should we book, and what about visas and food?
Book four to five months out, since summer places and residence rooms are limited. UK visas run around three weeks in peak season, while Schengen appointments for Spain can take six to ten weeks. Vegetarian and Jain meals are arranged in advance at both residences, confirmed in writing before departure.
