Experience Overview

The Srinagar-to-Leh road climbs from willow country into moon country over two gentle days, giving the body time to catch up. Three high passes — Zoji La, Khardung La, Chang La — and a private Maharaj kitchen keep the food familiar while the landscape stops being so.

The route runs Sonmarg to Kargil over Zoji La, then Leh via Lamayuru’s moonland and Alchi’s murals, with dawn prayers at Thiksey. Khardung La opens into Nubra’s dunes and camels, and Chang La leads to a night by Pangong Tso before the return to Leh for a last monastery visit.

The land shifts from Sonmarg’s meadows through Kargil’s working streets to Leh’s high desert monasteries, then out to Nubra’s cold-desert dunes and Pangong’s water that changes from slate to petrol-blue by the hour. A small convoy, oxygen on board, and a private kitchen keep the journey steady throughout.

Some moments are built for lingering: the first full view of Pangong appearing after Chang La, the vehicle going silent mid-sentence; hot jalebis from the Maharaj kitchen at a 4,000-metre lunch stop; and Thiksey’s dawn prayers, butter lamps and low horns before a twelve-metre Maitreya.

Built for riders-at-heart who now prefer a good driver, families with teenagers, photographers, and anyone who wants Ladakh without gambling their health on it. Not for travellers who need nightlife, guaranteed hot showers, or a schedule that ignores what altitude does to the body.

FAQs

Everything you
need to know

Do I need permits for Nubra and Pangong?

Arrow

Yes — Inner Line Permits are required for Indian citizens visiting Nubra, Pangong and beyond, arranged in advance against your ID; you carry photocopies and stop only at checkpoints. Foreign nationals need Protected Area Permits, which take a little longer — your curator handles both.

Is this doable with children or parents over 60?
