Experience Overview

A cold desert at 4,000 metres where monasteries older than a millennium sit on hills like grown things. Spiti is entered slowly from the Kinnaur side, gaining height a night at a time, then exits over Kunzum La to Chandratal and Manali, so the circuit never repeats a road.

The route runs Shimla to Kalpa, then Tabo’s ancient monastery and Kaza for an acclimatised look at Key monastery and Kibber’s high lanes. Langza, Hikkim and Komic fill the high-village days, before Kunzum La and a night by Chandratal on the way out to Manali.

The land turns grey-gold and treeless past Nako’s lake, monasteries stacked on conical hills above villages that run on thukpa, butter tea and barley. Chandratal shifts from turquoise to slate as the sun drops, and the road itself — carved, unpaved, occasionally closed — is as much the itinerary as any stop.

Some moments are built for lingering: Tabo’s prayer hall at 8 am, murals surfacing out of the dark as your eyes adjust; a postcard stamped at Hikkim that may beat you home by a fortnight; and Chandratal turning from turquoise to slate as the wind arrives on schedule.

Built for road-trip romantics, photographers, remote-workers on a proper break, and travellers who found Ladakh crowded and want the quieter sibling. Not for luxury-first travellers or tight schedules — Spiti’s plumbing is honest and its roads negotiable only with time to spare.

FAQs

Everything you
need to know

Spiti or Ladakh — which should we choose first?

Arrow

Ladakh is bigger, smoother-roaded and better hotelled; Spiti is rawer, emptier and cheaper, and puts you closer to village life — dinner in a homestay kitchen, not a hotel buffet. Families and comfort-led travellers usually start with Ladakh; if homestays and quieter roads appeal, Spiti first.

Is there mobile network and ATM access in Spiti?
