A HELD BREATH IN THE DUNES
- For one December weekend, a 17th-century palace in the Shekhawati sands fills with some of the best electronic and independent music in Asia. Magnetic Fields is small, sells out fast, and rewards people who plan like we do. Four nights, a group of 8 to 16, passes and the good stays held from midsummer.
- There is no mass version, which is exactly the appeal — a few thousand people inside and around Alsisar Mahal, stages tucked into courtyards and dunes, a crowd that came for the music. Days drift between pool-side sessions, craft-and-food courtyards and afternoon talks; nights move from the ramparts to the dance floors and, for the committed, to the sunrise stage with chai in both hands.
- Alsisar is a real four-hour drive from Jaipur, so we run the route with a buffer night each side — nobody lands at a dance floor exhausted. Desert December is a plot twist: pleasant 22°C afternoons, close to 5°C at 4 am. Every year someone packs for “Rajasthan” and shivers through the best sets. The host’s packing list is not a suggestion.
- Some moments are built for lingering: a sundowner set on the dunes, the palace going gold behind the decks as the temperature dives; the small stage at 2 am where forty people are watching the weekend’s actual best set; morning chai on the ramparts, mist on the sand, last night’s bassline still in your chest.
- Music-first travellers — the friend group that argues about lineups, design and film people, couples who prefer a dance floor to a candlelit dinner. Also a superb first festival for anyone who finds giant events intimidating. It is not for luxury-only travellers unless they book palace rooms very early, and not for anyone allergic to cold nights and dusty shoes.

Yes — and the rooms matter more than the passes. We verify festival passes through official channels and, crucially, hold your accommodation tier before it sells out, because palace rooms and the good stays disappear months ahead. Talk to us by midsummer. Your curator confirms both in writing before you travel, never leaving either to a last-minute scramble.
