MALL ROAD TO TIBET ROAD
Seven nights that climb from colonial Shimla at 2,206 metres to Kinnaur’s cliff villages near the old Tibet road. The first half is bandstands, bookshops and a toy train; the second is a different country — apple orchards, glacier rivers, roads carved into rock. Most itineraries stop at Shimla. This one starts there.
Ride the Kalka–Shimla railway up 96 kilometres of narrow gauge, walk the Mall to Scandal Point, and climb to Jakhu before the day-trippers arrive. Then drive NH-5 into Kinnaur proper — two nights in the Sangla valley walking to Chitkul, two in Kalpa watching light move across Kinnaur Kailash.
The change is gradual, then sudden. Deodar and pine give way past Rampur to bare rock, and the Sutlej narrows far below the road. Villages sit on ledges among apricot and apple trees, temples wear slate roofs and carved wood, and the air at 3,000 metres carries an edge even in June.
Some moments are built for lingering: the toy train pausing at Barog while chai arrives through the window; the Baspa at Chitkul running so clear you count the stones; Kinnaur Kailash at 6,050 metres holding the last light while Kalpa’s orchards go dark below. None of them photograph as well as they feel.
Built for road-trippers, photographers and couples who like their mountains with history attached. Not for anyone nervous on cliff-edge roads or needing five-star bathrooms — Kinnaur’s best stays are clean, warm and simple, and the driving days are real ones.

Is the road into Kinnaur safe?
It is a cliff-cut highway — dramatic, but maintained and driven daily by locals in ordinary cars. We use experienced hill drivers, keep all driving to daylight hours, and avoid the monsoon months when landslides are likeliest. May–June and September–October are the settled windows. Vertigo-prone travellers should sit on the hillside.
