Journey Highlights

  • Raft the 16-kilometre Shivpuri stretch — Grade II–III rapids on water that is genuinely green and cold.
  • Evening Ganga aarti at Parmarth Niketan, lamps circling as the river goes dark behind the Shiva statue.
  • A 7 am yoga class at an ashram that was teaching this long before it became an industry.
  • Wander the Beatles Ashram — graffiti-covered meditation domes where the White Album took shape in 1968.
  • Cross Ram Jhula on foot above the current, then get lost in the lanes of Swarg Ashram.
  • Har Ki Pauri at Haridwar for the bigger, louder aarti — bells, crowds, and diyas riding the current.
  • One cafe afternoon above the river doing absolutely nothing, which Rishikesh has quietly perfected.

Experience Overview

Four nights where the Ganga leaves the mountains — cold, green and quick, nothing like the river it becomes downstream. Rishikesh gives you the adventure and the ashrams; Haridwar, forty minutes away, gives you the old faith at full volume. Together they make a short trip with unusual range.

Mornings belong to the river: a rafting run down the 16-kilometre Shivpuri stretch when the season allows, or a sunrise dip at a quiet ghat for the less adventurous. Afternoons take in the Beatles Ashram, the suspension bridges, and cafe lanes. Evenings are for aarti — Parmarth Niketan one night, Har Ki Pauri the next.

The setting explains everything — forested Shivalik hills folding down to white sand beaches, temples in orange and cream stacked along both banks, and the constant sound of water and bells. Haridwar is denser and older, a pilgrim town that has run on the same evening timetable for generations.

Some moments are built for lingering: the first rapid’s cold slap and the laughter after it; hundreds of diyas drifting off Har Ki Pauri at dusk; a flute seller playing to nobody on Ram Jhula at 7 am; the smell of marigolds and river mist as the aarti flames go up. None of it needs commentary.

Built for friends’ groups, multi-generation families splitting between rafts and ghats, and anyone needing a short reset within reach of Delhi. Not for travellers wanting nightlife or a drink with dinner — both towns are strictly vegetarian and alcohol-free, and that is part of the deal, not a flaw.

Everything you
need to know

When can we actually go rafting?

Arrow

The season generally runs late September to June, with a full monsoon shutdown. October–November and February–April are the sweet spots. Operators are licensed and rapids on the standard stretch are Grade II–III; non-swimmers join daily with proper briefing and kit.

A raft mid-rapid on green-white water, paddles up, spray frozen against forested hills, gives way to the Parmarth Niketan aarti, tiered flame lamps circling the seated Shiva statue at dusk. Graffiti-painted meditation domes at the Beatles Ashram sit quiet under pipal roots, while diyas and marigolds drift on dark water at Har Ki Pauri, hands releasing one mid-frame. At dawn, Ram Jhula stands empty of crowds, mist rising off the Ganga beneath the cables.
