Japan
Robots to Torii Gates

Eight days from Tokyo's science halls to Kyoto's shrines, by bullet train.

Programme Overview

Science meets tradition,
robots to torii gates.

Japan lets a school group hold two ideas at once: a country running the world’s fastest trains and most advanced robots, and one that still bows at eight-hundred-year-old temples. Over eight days, Classes 8 to 12 move from Tokyo’s science halls — JAXA or the Miraikan, TeamLab, Shibuya and Skytree — to Hakone’s volcanic valleys under Mt Fuji, then ride the Shinkansen to Kyoto for Fushimi Inari’s torii gates, Arashiyama and Kinkaku-ji, closing through Nara’s Todai-ji into Osaka. These are guided visits and self-paced walks rather than lab sessions, and Japan’s trains and museum slots are booked and timed well ahead.

Learning Outcomes
  • A hands-on robotics and AI lab session, programming and re-programming in real time.
  • A guided visit to JAXA, Japan's space agency, with mission-control replicas and satellite hardware.
  • A systems-thinking exercise timed against the Shinkansen's near-perfect punctuality.
  • Temple architecture studied as anti-seismic design across four centuries.
  • A university campus visit with a student-led tour and an admissions overview.

Everything you
need to know

How are students supervised across so many cities?

Arrow

One chaperone per ten students, always including a female chaperone; all Picknic staff are police-verified and first-aid certified. We keep a doctor-on-call arrangement, and because the itinerary moves city to city, headcounts are taken at every train and site. Parents get a WhatsApp update each evening with photos and the next day's plan.

How far ahead should we book, and what about visas?
