Five nights that pair Kumaon’s best-loved lake town with India’s oldest national park, established in 1936 and still its most storied tiger forest. The rhythm is deliberate — two gentle hill days around Nainital, then down into the terai for safari mornings that start in the cold dark and repay it.
Nainital days are lake rows, the Snow View ropeway, a Naina Peak hike and unhurried Mall Road evenings, with a Pangot birding morning for early risers. Then two nights at Corbett’s edge: afternoon and dawn Gypsy safaris in zones like Bijrani or Jhirna, a naturalist alongside, and the Ramganga’s stones underfoot between drives.
The landscapes could not be less alike, which is the point. Nainital is a green bowl of oak and deodar around jade water, all bells and boat wakes. Corbett is horizontal — sal canopy, tall golden grass, riverbeds wide as runways — and it hums with things you hear long before you see.
Some moments are built for lingering: mist smoking off Naini Lake before the town wakes; the ropeway car hanging silent over pines; that electric minute after a sambar’s alarm call when the whole Gypsy stops breathing; hornbills crossing the Ramganga at dusk. A tiger, if it comes, is the bonus — not the trip.
