Experience Overview
Pench is the forest Kipling borrowed for the Jungle Book, and in May its waterholes become theatre. This two-night departure caps the group at six guests, with one dedicated Gypsy per safari, so window seats are everyone’s seats and no one races a radio alert.
Days run around four safari windows across two nights — dawn drives with chai in a flask by 5.30 am, and afternoon runs from 3.30 to sunset when tigers move towards water. Middays are for the lodge pool, the bird list, and a proper breakfast after the early start.
Pench’s sal and teak forest is open and grassy, giving visibility other reserves envy, with langurs sounding the alarm long before you see anything yourself. Summer heat pushes tigers to the waterholes, while winter mornings near 8°C keep the forest green and gentle instead.
Some moments are built for lingering: engine off at a waterhole at 6.10 am, mist on the grass, and the long wait that suddenly isn’t; a langur alarm call passing overhead as your naturalist whispers she’s moving; and dinner under mahua trees, comparing photographs nobody will believe are unedited.
Built for first-time safari-goers, photographers who’d rather not share a bench with five phones, and families with children over six — only one child under six is allowed per departure. Not for travellers who need a sighting guarantee; tigers are wild, and no one can promise otherwise.

What are the chances of actually seeing a tiger?
Good, and better in summer — Pench has a healthy tiger density and open forest, and three to four safaris across two nights give multiple rolls of the dice. But it's a wild forest, not an enclosure; leopards, dhole, gaur and 250-plus bird species fill the gaps generously.
